Nothing is more important to our community than preparing the next generation to be good citizens, critical thinkers, caring adults and to be prepared to take their place as leaders. Teachers are in a unique position to influence not only the intellectual development of young people, but also their concept of self and how they see themselves in the future. It is a humbling task that requires passion for youth and the ability to build meaningful, supportive relationships with each child.
Black Men Teach will place you in front of children early on, even before you have taken your first course in education. This will help you determine if education is your calling, and for those who choose to pursue this as their career, it affords early, practical experience working with young people. These experiences may be as an in-school intern, a counselor in a summer enrichment program such as Breakthrough Twin Cities, or one-on-one mentoring opportunities.
How To Apply
Let’s just start with a conversation; no forms to fill out or information to provide. Send us a note at this address:
and someone will get back to you within a few days to schedule an initial conversation. This will give you the opportunity to learn more about teaching as a profession and how Black Men Teach can support you on this journey. And it will give us the opportunity to get to know you, your interests and current life situation so we can help you select the right pathway.
Our Training
Black Men Teach Twin Cities does not deliver teacher training directly but partners with a limited number of high quality programs that will prepare you for a successful career teaching in an urban environment. Based on your personal situation, we will work with you to determine if Metropolitan State University, St. Thomas University – in partnership with The Dougherty Family College, The New Teachers Project, Teach for America or another pathway is best for you.
We will assist you in applying for the appropriate program and work with you one-on-one in finding the resources to help defray the cost of your education.
Once enrolled, you will be placed with a group of other students, along with an advisor, to support you in every way as you pursue your career in education.

If you would like to meet a current Black male educator, let us know by sending us an email and we will connect you with one.
