Empowering the Growth of Black Male Teachers.

Black Men Teach strives to create the conditions where Black male elementary teachers thrive in Minnesota. Our children's educational journey remains incomplete without their invaluable presence and influence.

Why?

In the State of Minnesota, only 0.5% of all K-12 teachers are Black men.*

Our vision

A future where students of color experience the social, academic, and emotional advantages of being taught by educators who share their cultural background.

Every child deserves an excellent education, yet Minnesota’s graduation gap between Black and white students ranks among the worst in the United States.

What is the cumulative effect on a Black child, who after 6 years in elementary school, has seen only white teachers and administrators?

Research comparing the academic outcomes of elementary school-age Black boys, based on whether they had a Black male teacher or not, revealed strikingly divergent results.

Students who had a Black male teacher were 29% less likely to drop out of school in subsequent years, with this figure rising to 39% for very low-income Black students.

our Solution

Recruit, Prepare, Place, and Retain Black male teachers in elementary schools.

When a Black man expresses interest in becoming a teacher, we provide him with a viable and affordable pathway to the classroom which we tailor to his specific aspirations, talents, and challenges.

Black Men Teach advocates for each teacher candidate, tackling issues such as inadequate recruitment efforts, limited teacher training options and associated costs, and ineffective induction processes.

By creating a more welcoming school culture for Black educators, we prepare students to become active and engaged citizens possessing the knowledge and skills required to move us all forward.

Since 20-- we've solved problems, cultivated connections and developed our communities. Brick by brick.
